The thing with the bars is an aspect-ratio thing. You have them at
three levels. The physical ratio of your screen, the ratio of your
screen resolution and the ratio of your recording. If they don't match
those bars fill up remaining space.
To start with, you have to make sure the first two match. So if your
screen is 16:9 don't use a 4:3 resolution. Secondly MythTV tries to
get the resolution of the recording, but it cannot always get it
right. You then can set it yourself.
When in the recording go to menu (M) and then Video => Aspect-ratio
In the configuration you can also set a default, which normally should
be auto. Go to Video => Playback second screen. Here you can also set
the Zoom, which is also in the menu.
I have it set to 4:3 on my 16:9 screen because it is an old-fashion
screen with PAL 4:3 resolution in overscan set to 16:9. And I have set
my GUI accordingly. I also have the Zoom and Aspect-ratio toggles set
to W and Ctrl-W and mapped them to my remote, so I can easily adjust.
(I like to watch old 4:3 series in 14:9, so the bars on left and right
are not to ugly big).

If you create an xorg.conf, make it an xorg.conf.d/ directory with
separate .conf files for screen, card etc. That way automatic updates
will not f** with it. See earlier thread last week.
