I have two ID41 and have not seen or heard of this problem. However one of mine runs 24/7 and the other only gets occasional use going back to suspend when not in use.
From your description it kind of sounds like it powered down enough to turn the fan off but on enough to keep generating heat? I wouldn't have thought something like that was possible! Is it under warranty?
It's obviously too late now but I wonder if there was something still being displayed on the screen while it was 'off' - although that doesn't explain the fan stopping.
