The system recognized the device found the device ID, I used an existing Input Connection, first, and then scanned for channels, and still system status shows "tuner error" for the HDHomerun, even after restarting the FE. What have I missed?

I am no expert and I do not have a solution but I may be able to clarify the cause a little bit.
I am running MythTV 0.27 on Lubuntu 13.10 on a Shuttle DS47 as a combined FE/BE. It has access to one HDHomerun which is set up for 4 simultaneous recordings per physical tuner giving me 8 virtual tuners in total. I recently realised that 8 tuners was sometimes not quite enough, so I attempted to increase the virtual tuners to 5 per physical tuner. As you described, everything worked fine until I looked at System status. Tuners 9 and 10 were showing "tuner .. has an error". So I tried again doing everything from scratch including a full scan on both tuners. Same problem. Changing the setup so that one physical tuner is set for only 3 simultaneous recordings gets me 8 virtual tuners and no errors but I would rather not use 5 + 3 so I reset again to 4 + 4. For the moment I am stuck at 8 tuners maximum. I had considered adding another HDHomerun but, in the light of your comment, maybe that wouldn't achieve anything. Is there an upper limit on the number of tuners? How many tuners do yo
u have in total?
