I'm actually not sure to tell you the truth.  It could be...the specs
just say PCI Express x16.  I sure hope that's not the issue.  I guess
I'll find out when I get the MSI I just ordered.  For what it's worth,
I'm replacing this GT 430 PCI Express 2.0 x16, which did work:

...not that that means anything.  Like I said, I guess I'll find out.

I wish I understood what is actually going on with that GT 430 I'm
replacing.  It periodically starts running very hot and then the
temperature comes down...all the while, nvidia-smi seems to be
reporting that the fan is working (based on the fan speed % hanging
etc).  It seems like an issue with the fan, but unless that fan speed
is in fact wrong I'm not sure I understand how.
