Same here in the UK as well - I didn't get the joke either.

The cars are either BMW (bee em double-u) or just BM (bee em).
Or if you want to annoy the driver, "a German Mondeo" (it was "German Cortina" when I first heard that as a put down). For those unfamiliar with our models, a Ford Mondeo is a mid range saloon, commonly used by travelling sales reps, years ago, the Ford Cortina was a common one. In Britain, having a BMW was seen as a status symbol - but in Germany they are (were ?) commonly in the same camp as the Cortina/Mondeo, a "common" car frequently used by on the road salesmen. Hence the put down - which I've found quite effective a couple of times :-)
