Well, not exactly.  UPS's don't send shut down commands.  They send
status reports.  (e.g., I'm on AC power/I'm on battery, 10%
remaining).  The UPS doesn't need to know the OS of any system
monitoring these reports.  It's the job of the software running on the
host to shut the host down in response to these reports, depending on
how it has been configured.
