[mythtv-users] NUC unable to show guide on HD channels when using VAAPI

I have the DN2820FYKH NUC, and am having issues with viewing the guide when in livetv, and seemingly triggered on HD channels using VAAPI playback profile.

a bit of background info: i've wiped my BE and started fresh, reattaching my existing NUC FE to the new BE (was on fixes/0.27 before reinstall and still am on fixes/0.27). was on opensuse12.3, now on ubuntu14.04LTS.
I've also updated my channel script to reflect UK freesat lineup; most HD channels have now replaced the SD channels (so BBC1 HD is now on 101, BBC2 HD on 102 etc).
FE's run 28.2 mythaeon theme.

I believe i have the intel gfx drivers correctly installed for vaapi usage; vainfo shows 'VAEntrypointVLD' against all profiles.

if i use the VAAPI playback profile:
What happens is when i first open livetv guide (the one with the smaller tv view) on a HD channel, i briefly see the layout, but then get dropped back to fullscreen TV. the menu considers me being still in the guide. pressing 'exit' will make my remote control livetv again even though no UI change is visible. if i enter the guide again, i will see no change but the FE thinks i am in the guide and have to press 'exit' back to livetv control.
Once the above has been done, if i do the same on an SD channel without exiting livetv, then the same issue will happen.
if i exit back to the mythtv main menu, go to an SD channel and open guide then the UI will act normally and always show the livetv guide interface.

If i do the exact same with 'normal' playback profile, then everything will act normal.

Using OpenGL seems to work ok as a test, but the colours are off (purple tint to the livetv UI overlay components (eg: pressing 'info').
