Bad memory (run memtest86+) can corrupt file systems.
Sometimes (on older vintage systems) the memory failure
is actually caused by excessive ripple to the components
caused by capacitor failures (although the rash of bad
chemistry "bad caps" left this world by the end of the 2000's).
Statistically an average consumer grade electrolytic cap
has an operating life of about 6 years, which means that
some fail earlier, and that only MB manufactures that strive
for high quality (rather than highest profit) and use high temp
rated components should expect longer life.
