[mythtv-users] Disk Report, Is this Still Safe to use? (Was: Muti-Year Installation Major Disk Corruption)

So decided to start a new thread to get rid of the "answer needed quickly"
part of this whole thing.

I won't go into all the details but I'm on my way back up at this point
thanks to the information everyone helped me with.

While continuing down the diagnosis line I popped in my USB Key of
Mythbuntu, downloaded smartmontools (SMART tools), and started poking at
the disk with issues.

First thing I did was ran an fsck on the filesystems to see what it would
come back with.  Pretty much everything was totally clean other than
/dev/sda8...yea, /var on mount...it had to be.

So I ran a fix on everything (not much else I can do), and I started
running smartmontools against it.

And here's what I don't understand...smartmontools is coming back showing
nothing wrong with the disk.  The "short" test shows me no errors.  The
long test is 50% complete and also still showing no errors.

I haven't tried a bad blocks check or anything like that (I don't know if
that's what smartmon is doing or not) but the disk seems to be perfectly
healthy so far...

What gives?  Was it just filesystem corruption that ate my data and not bad
blocks?  What the heck would corrupt the filesystem like that?  (there's
been no reboots, it's on battery backup, etc.)

Do I trust this thing or trash it?
