First he should try and use the utility provided by mythtv for this very 
purpose. On my Debian system, this is here:

/usr/share/doc/mythtv-backend/contrib/maintenance/optimize_mythdb.pl

MCC is a utility system provided by mythbuntu for managing mythtv: "Mythtv 
Control Center".
