I haven’t tried AirPlay since iOS 9 came out (and little with iOS 8), but...
Sounds odd, but make sure the frontend has been running for a few minutes before trying AirPlay. Sometimes takes a while for the registration to complete.
Try playing music via AirPlay; this has been the most reliable airplay function for years.
Try showing photos on the frontend via AirPlay.
I see that there are a couple of open tickets related to AirPlay but I don’t see an obvious connection to your issue:
