I'd already tried that. It results in "lircd: invalid argument count" when
restarting lirc.

Or you may need to surround the entire parameter phrase with single quotes.

I tried these combinations which also fail:
REMOTE_DEVICE="'name=*eHome Infrared Remote Transceiver*'"
REMOTE_DEVICE='"name=*eHome Infrared Remote Transceiver*"'
REMOTE_DEVICE="name=*eHome\ Infrared\ Remote\ Transceiver*"

I then ran out of ideas and stayed with the ? wildcard approach which
works.
