I think you will find that if you do make substantial contributions
in those areas that those doing the coding will likely listen
and sometimes prioritize your requests.  Not always, of course,
but certainly not never, either.  But the key word is substantial
(and it will likely mean different things to different people.  For
you, 2 hrs of your life may be substantial, for others, 2 hrs is
lower than the daily commute time).
