Interestingly, this is sometimes a result of audio quality
"progress".  5.1 audio (in the shows themselves) and
stereo (or mono) from commercials/old movies is often
decoded (and/or demuxed) differently by your TV or your
A/V receiver.  Depending on the specifics, you can
sometimes adjust for the decoding/levels, but it does
require some time and effort (and such approaches
for MythTV should likely be discussed in other threads).

Regardless, you likely should not try to bring up more
than one issue at a time.  More than one muddles the
message.
