Random thoughts follow.

There are many different models of NASs out there
(even if you limit it to just synology).

As a pure recording engine (say, an SBE), they likely would
do fine (be aware that some use interesting architectures
and/or distributions, so you may need to be comfortable
with a "build it from source" approach).. Depending on model,
they may run other apps (i.e. MySQL) adequately (although
MythTV can generate some big queries if you have large lists
of recording schedules and large lists of stations, so, size does
matter). Transcoding is resource intensive. There are some
models with hardware transcoding engines that you might be
able to take advantage of (although you likely need to roll
your own there too, and I do not ever recall seeing an API
to access the transcoding engine from outside their apps).
At some point, some of their large models are little different
than any other PC you could build (other than they provide
the OS). Xeon E3 systems with ECC memory are quite
capable.

But random thoughts do not count for much. Someone
has to go out and buy it (or, better yet, a few to compare
and contrast), and try it, and report on their experience
with specifics.
