The scanning process allows you to accept or reject all of the 'found' 
channels or deal with them individually. But the scan is intended to 
find the channels which you can actually receive. If you don't/can't get 
one (which is possible) then it will not show up and will not be part of 
your channel list.
Technically, you *could* add your own table rows. There's a map for that 
around here somewhere.... ahh.. opps, it's marked 'Here be Dragons'.

Mythtv-setup -> Channel Editor, select the OTA source (to reduce the 
length of the list ) and then in each channel change the 'Channel 
Number' to what you want to show. This is 'channum' in the tables, NOT 
chanid. Channum is for display purposes and not used for any important 
purpose internally, so you can change it as you desire.

I am not sure what you mean when you say you have your remote set up to 
use a dot. I presume that you mean your lircrc is set up to parse for a 
dot but not for an underscore... and I don't think I have ever seen a 
remote which *has* an underscore key!.
