During testing I had the Hauppauge tuner unplugged to make sure that
there weren't any conflicts or misleading messages.

If I have the tuner plugged in I also get an echo I/O error while
starting and stopping the lirc service.  The problem is that the lirc
script tries to enable the lirc protocol for every remote on the
system.  The errors are being generated when attempting to modify the
remote receiver in the tuner.  On my system it seems safe to ignore
them.
