Which is why I qualified it with "from what I can tell..."

The systemd-shim, systemd-services, and various libraries are installed.
 "dmesg|grep systemd" returns a few lines, most notably "system-udevd:
starting version 204".  However further reading suggests that systemd is
not the default in ubuntu in 14.04 and I do still see upstart installed so
I suppose that systemd is not being used?

Not sure exactly how to tell.
