I haven't tried it on a Mythbuntu system but Mythbuntu is based on XFCE  
and my desktop XFCE uses pavucontrol (audio settings/menu) and  
indicator-sound for the panel, so you could try that;

sudo apt-get install pavucontrol indicator-sound
