If my wife would not have imposed this purchasing freeze on me till after the holidays, I would be ok with moving my long term goals to now. But I need it up an running so she can enjoy it, then sell her on why I need/want another $2k worth of infrastructure hardware.

Utter tosh.
** YOUR OWN RESTRICTIONS ** are the only thing that is restricting you.

It has already been explained how you can do it - very easily, very securely. If you refuse to use simple tools that are already there then it's no use whining about why the project doesn't support some facility that probably no-one else has asked for before.

According to your description, you have the knowledge how to fix it - it's just that you won't.

Of course, if you really really want it to fit in with your "unusual" network setup*, it's open source and I'm sure patches would be accepted if done properly ;-)
* Unusual in that few (if any) users in the market this software is aimed at will be running more than a very basic network setup. Certainly nothing like you describe.
