I don't know if it would help you, but you could take a look at 
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LTSEnablementStack.  I gather from that 
wiki that the 12.04.5 HWE is the trusty (14.04) HWE.  Perhaps 
sudo apt-get install --install-recommends linux-generic-lts-trusty 
xserver-xorg-lts-trusty libgl1-mesa-glx-lts-trusty would work, although 
it does not mention that option.
