I must admit I just can't see the reasons here. I can't see any benefit to be achieved at all, and the downside would seem to be increased storage space requirements, higher performance hardware to playback, decreased compatibility (may need to down-transcode on-the-fly for non-compatible devices), time and CPU cycles to transcode, and finally reduction in quality (although I assume it shouldn’t be too bad given upscaling not downscaling, although will depend very much on codecs I guess). Nothing to gain and a lot to lose?
