I'm not the OP, but in Steppes/0.28-pre, they do appear in base.xml
for button names basebuttonprevious and basebuttonnext.

$ grep 'mm_.*png' ~/.mythtv/themes/*/base.xml
                     <filename>mm_prev_off.png</filename>
                     <filename>mm_prev_on.png</filename>
                     <filename>mm_prev_pushed.png</filename>
                     <filename>mm_next_off.png</filename>
                     <filename>mm_next_on.png</filename>
                     <filename>mm_next_pushed.png</filename>

$ egrep 'basebuttonnext|basebuttonprev' *
base.xml:    <button name="basebuttonprev">
base.xml:    <button name="basebuttonnext">
music-ui.xml:            <button name="prev" from="basebuttonprev">
