I believe amd64 is the generic term used by Linux distros for current 64
bit processors. It was named after AMD's 64 bit expansion of the x86
instruction set (which was later reluctantly adopted by Intel) and to
distinguish it from Intel's Itanium (Itanic?) 64 bit effort.
