The most obvious choice is the To: header

To: "Discussion about MythTV" <mythtv-users at mythtv.org>

Another possible header is the List-Id: header.

Then create the filters on the server. It takes one minute to create one
and the email is filtered for all email clients.

It's easy to read mailing lists in Thunderbird. 'T' jumps to the next
unread message in the next thread, 'N' jumps to the next unread message
(in the same thread), 'Space' scrolls through the message and jumps to
the next unread message if it reaches the end. I think these shortcuts
work in most email clients.

No need to delete them manually in Thunderbird. Firstly you can choose a
view to display only threads with unread messages, secondly you can
select in the properties of that folder to delete emails after xx days.
