I wouldn't bother with compiling from source.  If SteamOS does not
provide MythTV natively, then I would just add the URL for the
deb-multimedia site to the apt sources configuration for SteamOS.  You
can see the details here:

http://www.deb-multimedia.org/

These packages are designed to work with Debian, but SteamOS is
probably close enough that it should just work.

Of course, I haven't actually tried it.
