It indicates the recording rule type for that recording.

It is actually a image specified by the theme but it sounds like you're  
seeing the default ones provided by /usr/share/mythtv/themes/default/

I believe 0.27 may have changed the recording rule types but for 0.26 it  
is:

A = All
C = Channel
F = Find One
O = Override
S = Single
T = Timeslot every day
W = Timeslot every week
