I should have given more info here.  I gave Konqueror the url from 
0.24.3. It said it couldn't open it and offered various options, one of 
which was vlc.  I use vlc often to play mp2 files stripped out from 
DVB-T radio programmes, so I chose to let Konq try to open it with vlc, 
and the 'music' file played.

vlc (2.0.10) also sees the Myth Media Servers from both boxes at

View > Playlist > Local Network > Universal Plug'n'Play,

but it gives no info about the content available, and on myth 0.24.3 the 
polling process created quite a high cpu load.  I have seen this route 
work occasionally in the past, but never reliably with any of the 
myth/vlc version combinations that I have tried.
