I see James has had second thoughts about his 'success' so I've changed 
the title.

I did a new build of 0.27.2-2-g7e34d53 _without_ those patches.  It 
behaves in the same way; menus and navigation are fine but no content is 
delivered, and it still reports the Protocol error under 'general'. 
With --setverbose none,upnp,socket I have seen MythSocket ctor and dtor, 
usually on selecting a new Recordings/Music/Videos category.
