The current content owners (and their regime) do
not generally accept that you "buy" anything.
At best, you obtain a "right of private viewing",
which does not, for example, include a "right to
perform", so you cannot take a DVD you "bought",
and using your 100,000 watt projector, show it to
all in Central Park, without paying the licensing
authorities (ask any bar how much it costs to turn
the TV to OTA network sports broadcasts, that
are, ostensibly "free" to view).

Licensing (and its technological implementation
called DRM) is a minefield of competing interests,
and there is real money involved.  And where
there is real money involved, bad things tend to
happen.
