Ian, it does sound from this as if the HD part has failed.  You could
follow up http://stevekerrison.com/290e/ and try and contact Steve to
see if this is a possibility (or via the other links on his site).  If
you want you could send me your 290e (I already have 2 on my system) and
I'll try it and see what happens.  If all else fails it sounds like an
email to where you bought it from!
