I think Stuart has it fixed, but a few more thoughts...

Your dmesg shows it (the Sony device) as adapter 1  ??

Can you boot without it, then insert and see dmesg tail?

You have been moving it around.  Is the coax input connector still 
intact?  I once had it stick on the end of the aerial cable.  The HD/SD 
difference suggests that this isn't the problem, but...
