Hi, I my samsung TV is very finicky about the HDMI port connect to the PC.
 Whenever, i switch between inputs HDMI1 (chromecast) --> HDMI2 (mac-mini
running ubuntu), the screen becomes snowy. In order to reset the TV, i had
to turn switch to the HDMI input, then switch the TV on/off.

I also ran into a very weird issue where the color depth wasn't being set
correctly, so i had to manually set some registers
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2118053&p=12523426#post12523426.
This most likely isn't your issue.

If you can't figure it out, find out the version of X in your distribution
and try another distribution with a different version, you might get lucky.
