What video playback method are you using: vdpau, openGL or Xv ?

The nouveau driver does support VDPAU but requires firmware.

But try the nvidia driver (as Nick suggested).

MythTV (0.25 on) does not playback mismatched video-refresh rate video
very well..
ticket#11246

I have never observed AV sync drift with nvidia driver just jitter.

It is likely your display will accept 2560x1440p50. But if the display
EDID does not advertise this mode you would have to override.
The nVidia Xorg driver has a rich set of configuration options to allow
that type of control.
