Normally the default storage group is called "default" and this is where you will need your folder added, in addition to the "LiveTV" storage group (although I think it falls back to default if livetv group is not present). I'm running MythTV on Linux Mint (Version 0.26 / v0.26.0-37-g340b5d4).
Your recommendation seems to work and I think, problem is solved: I just 
ran first line that you recommended
"sudo chown mythtv:mythtv -R /home/MyName/mythtv/recordings/" and now I 
can watch TV, can record and watch recordings.  (I haven't tried second 
line "sudo chmod 777 -R /home/MyName/mythtv/recordings/").
