I've not used zoneminder integration since my father had to be admitted
to a home, so I checked it.
Ran into an error on my test machine, which is running ZM 1.26.5 and
mythzoneminder is pointed to it.
Got This version of ZM is to old you need 1.24.0 or later ''.
So, I went to my production machine in the kitchen, where I spend most
of my time. Hey, sue me, I'm a "foodie", a chef and an information
junkie.  ;)
I installed mythzoneminder on that machine (my test machine is in the
kitchen as well), no problem running it on my mythbuntu 12.04 boxes.
Fired up my test 13.10 box, got "The mythzmserver uses protocol version
10, but this client only understands version 7." Interestingly enough, I
pointed it to my  ZM 1.25.0 primary server.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          

I finally went to my old production kitchen machine, which was as much
test as production, an Atom netbook that is loaded with mythbuntu 12.04.
ZM works perfectly.

So, what distro version and what ZM version are you running?
There seems to be some issues with a non-standard Ubuntu installed
Zoneminder on a 12.04 box that runs mythzoneminder.
There seems to be some issues on a 13.10 box talking to a stock 12.04
mythbuntu box.
I also noticed a problem with my startup scripts, as one box is supposed
to launch mjpgstreamer and didn't.
But, that latter is as much me as the non-standard testing version of
1.26.5 I'm using on that box. It is a test box.
