Why would it be? As long as the frontend/viewer was not "too" far
behind the live data, the front-end's read(2)s would be coming out of
the kernel's disk buffers wouldn't it?

Per above, I disagree. One process requires disk I/O but the other
should be leveraging the buffer cache in the kernel.
