I mostly solved my AirPlay problem. Very helpful was this old thread:

http://www.mythtvtalk.com/airtunes-mythtv-v0-25-howto-15514/

... which said:

> For Airplay to work, MythTV must listen on the IPv6 link-local addresses (fe80:: ).

I didn't have IPv6 enabled on the wireless network interface my LAN
traffic comes through. So mythfrontend was doing this:

2014-12-02 16:25:20.019304 I  Listening on TCP 127.0.0.1:5000
2014-12-02 16:25:20.019414 I  Listening on TCP [::1]:5000
2014-12-02 16:25:20.019516 I  AirPlay: Created airplay objects.

... but apparently that wasn't enough for anything on the local network
to reach it.

The wiki page at:

http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/AirTunes/AirPlay

... doesn't mention anything about IPv6, which seems strange if it's a
pre-requisite that AirPlay silently fails without. Unless somebody tells
me different, I will update that wiki page.

Since enabling IPv6 on the network interface, mythfrontend does this:

2014-12-02 16:25:20.019304 I  Listening on TCP 127.0.0.1:5000
2014-12-02 16:25:20.019414 I  Listening on TCP [::1]:5000
2014-12-02 16:25:20.019516 I  AirPlay: Created airplay objects.
2014-12-02 16:25:20.019529 I  Listening on TCP
[fe80::21d:fff:feb6:d14%wlan1]:5000
2014-12-02 16:25:20.019558 I RAOP Device: Listening for connections on
port 5000
2014-12-02 16:25:20.019868 I  Listening on TCP 127.0.0.1:5100
2014-12-02 16:25:20.019928 I  Listening on TCP [::1]:5100
2014-12-02 16:25:20.020011 I  Listening on TCP
[fe80::21d:fff:feb6:d14%wlan1]:5100

... and audio via AirPlay works great!

Max.
