But only a particular class of hardware failures.  I've seen a case
where an electrical short simultaneously fried multiple disks in a
raid for which there was no backup.

And hardware failures as well.

Raid is for high availability.  When having zero downtime is
important, go with raid.  For most other situations, backups are the
better choice.

For me, for my MythTV recording disks, I've chosen not to back them up
or raid them at all.  Over the years I have lost some recordings to
disk failures, but I'm ok with that.  It's just TV.  They rebroadcast
everything eventually.
