Sure you can.  I do.  I have an LG TV.  When I had a Samsung, I didn't
get better than Stereo but when I returned that and replaced it with an
LG TV I now get DD or DTS if I want.

I can only chalk that up to either ignorance or laziness on Samsung's
part since there is absolutely no reason a TV cannot pass on > stereo
audio signal if the source is not flagged as copyright (which stuff
coming from an MythTV HTPC should not be).

I guess it's just easier to be lazy and downmix everything than to do
the right thing and make it conditional.

Per the above, not entirely true.
