considering, at my disposal is a 250GB drive and two 1TB drives. Eventually
I'd like the OS to be on the 250 and the other two to be set up in RAID.
The question is during this upgrade process can Ubuntu 12.04 and mythbuntu
14.04 be installed in dual boot fashion giving me the flexibility to
continue to record on Ubuntu while I take my time migrating scripts and
tweaking Mythbuntu?

something a couple or three times its foggy at best.

be honest - my recommendation (assuming Ubuntu 12.04 (currently working
MythTV system) is on the 250Gb where you ultimately want the *buntu 14.04
install and that one of the 1Tb drives is blank / blankable) would be:

wipe the 1Tb fallback and add the drive as the second recording drive.

failed upgrade attempts via update manager. when I click on the details
button I can monitor, to an extent, what is happening, but I don't know how
to save it. I recall something like "unexpected multiple test files" and a
statement "this may not work well" . I have the functioning 12.04 system on
the 1TB and the 250GB drives. I could experiment using the TTY method
suggested above, but would this give me a way to save/share errors I might
encounter along the way?

general upgrades and "do-release-upgrade" for release upgrades..

been modified from standard, notably mysql, samba and apache config files.
You have the option to view the changes it wants to make before being
committed, and the upgrade saves the original config file. If unsure
about the questions the upgrade is asking, google it prior to committing.
If in doubt, use the package maintainers version. You can also press
ALT-F2 to switch to another TTY, login and look at files in question,
ALT-F1 to switch back.

shutdown partway through the upgrade. After cleaning the heatsink, powered
it up, restarted the upgrade, and it finished successfully. My MBE has
been updated from 10.04 -> 12.04 -> 14.04.

My experience with update manager is just the opposite, except where mythtv
is concerned. Several distros of Ubuntu on at least seven PC's have gone
flawlessly.
If I try it with TTY and encounter similar errors/warnings, is there a way
to save them, say to a flash drive or somewhere? With recent attempts I
could not get back into the unsuccessfully upgraded OS to review any
details or logs etc.
I guess a pen and paper would work, so tedious though. Suggestions? Daryl
