I can't help with your pulseaudio woes but your solution to personal  
alarm clock music sounds expensive. Do you really have a computer  
broadcasting FM 24/7 just so you don't have to listen to adverts in  
the ten seconds it takes to wake up and head for the bathroom?

I'm sure there must be alarm/clock/radios that play from a USB stick.  
If you're music collection is too large you could try an internet  
radio tuned to your own shoutcast server. I have a setup involving MPD  
with some scripts to pause when nothing is listening and play when a  
connection comes in. It lets the disks spin down to save power. I  
would be using it but my internet radio (cheap old Murphy Richards)  
uses 20W when on and 20W in standby so it gets switched off at the wall.
