Don't necessarily rule out the receiver. I had a brand new Pioneer receiver that after a random period of time (ranging from minutes to days) would turn the video to a total red hue. I replaced everything else in the device chain to prove it was the receiver - yet the replacement receiver did the same thing (I could temporarily fix by pulling the power plug for 5 min like you). I eventually turned off enough settings in the receiver for the problem to stop occurring.

Have you tried pulling the power cord on your MythFE for 5 min to see if the problem temporarily resolves?

I'm assuming your Onkyo is set to auto detect the audio. Have you tried setting it to a basic stereo setting and see if problem reoccurs?

Also have you disabled any sleep settings / screensavers / screen blanking on both MFE and receiver? And TV? IIRC my Pioneer receiver will recheck its inputs if something changes on its outputs (like the TV been turned on / off) even if there is no change to the input or the sound is not going via TV at all.
