RAID through a dedicated adapter of any sort locks you into that 
vendor.  The ASICs driving proper hardware RAID adapters (as opposed to 
cheap soft-RAID adapters) exist to offload the XOR functions necessary 
for RAID5/6, but the various forms of mirroring and striping have no 
intensive computations to speak of.  Basically, all you're doing is 
sacrificing flexibility.
