Of course lircd was running, otherwise irw and ircat wouldn't have worked.

I got it working now by putting the *socket* (/dev/lircd) into the "LIRC
daemon *socket*" setting instead of the device /dev/lirc0. d'oh

I had /dev/lircd earlier in there, but since lirc support wasn't
compiled in, it didn't work and I thought I need to change it.

All good now and the switch over from Ubuntu to Gentoo comes closer ;-)
