You definitely need that trick.

I also found with Ubuntu 12.04 (kernel 3.2.0) that the T290e was glitchy until I upgraded to 12.04.2 (the hwe kernel upgrade to 3.5.x) it also works fine with 12.04.3 (kernel 3.8.0) which is what I'm running right now.
