Finally got this fixed.  Updated my remote frontend upstairs to 
0.26-fixes, and found that it couldn't access my videos on the BE.  Log 
said it couldn't connect to the backend using its IPv6 address.  Blanked 
that field in mythtv-setup on the BE/FE machine - > all's good now :-).
