There are a number of aspects to making a remote work, complicated by
the fact that if your remote is supported by the kernel, you may not
need lirc. Frankly I have a remote that doesn't need lirc at all, and
has switchable keymaps so when I start xbmc I change to a xbmc keymap.
All is well remote wise in my house.

Anyway most/many remotes are now dealt with in linux as kernel hid
devices and pass a keycode, same as a keyboard.

What happens when you plug the receiver in? dmesg shoud record what
happens, and give you an input device that the receiver is sending
keypresses to.

Also take note of the vendor/product ID, obtainable from lsusb. It is
googleable.

I feel a bit guilty about referring people to the xbmc forums, but
there are a couple of good articles there which should get you
started.

Here, mythtv wiki, lirc web pages, mythbuntu forums, xbmc forums, xbmc
wiki (the xbmc stuff marginally but remotes are frequently dealt with
issue there)
