Actually, he almost definitely used vim (vi Improved), started with the
vi symlink/alias to vim. Nearly no one has traditional vi installed,
and even though vim has a vi-compatibility mode, which is enabled by
default, any sane distro should ensure there's a system vimrc so that
vim does not enable compatibility mode. Using compatibility mode causes
you to lose all reasons for using vim. It's not 1976, anymore, so
there's no good reason to use vi-compatibility mode--and if you're still
running vi macros that you haven't updated since 1991 (the year vim was
released), you really need to look at a calendar. And/or if you refuse
to learn the differences/benefits in vim, you really need to rethink
your plan.
