Actually, he almost definitely used vim (vi Improved), started with the 
vi symlink/alias to vim.  Nearly no one has traditional vi installed, 
and even though vim has a vi-compatibility mode, which is enabled by 
default, any sane distro should ensure there's a system vimrc so that 
vim does not enable compatibility mode.  Using compatibility mode causes 
you to lose all reasons for using vim.  It's not 1976, anymore, so 
there's no good reason to use vi-compatibility mode--and if you're still 
running vi macros that you haven't updated since 1991 (the year vim was 
released), you really need to look at a calendar.  And/or if you refuse 
to learn the differences/benefits in vim, you really need to rethink 
your plan.
