vi is probably what he used, and it is one of the most powerful
around... but also a very, eccentric, one.

vim or emacs are probably "the best", however both come with fairly
steep learning curves.

I find that I use nano most often as it's very simple.

I recommend that you take the time to understand the basics of vi, as
it is included in just about every linux distribution, including many
embedded systems.  But unless you work in it regularly and are willing
to take some time to really get to know it, having nano around, which
is in most modern distros, is pretty handy.
